About Holi:
Why holi is celebrated?
- The Holi Festival is a way to celebrate the arrival of spring as well as a chance for individuals to start over and let all of their inhibitions go. One of the few occasions when fervent Hindus can let loose is during the Holi Festival, when legend has it, the gods turn a blind eye.
Different Types of Holi Celebrations:
- 1) Lathmar Holi (Barsana Village, Uttar Pradesh) : The Barsana region of India, which includes Vrindavan, Mathura, Nandgaon, and Barsana, is where Holi is said to have originated. It's interesting to note that the festival is celebrated here with lathis as well as colours. Women traditionally use lathis to drive away men. However, this isn't a beating session; rather, it's a crazed one, and the men are also well-prepared.
- 2) Shigmo Goa : Goa hosts a huge spring festival called Shigmo. One of the main Hindu festivals is this one. Farmers perform local folk dances and street dances here. This festival is eagerly celebrated in Goa by visitors as well.
- 3) Basant Utsav and Dol Jatra (West Bengal) : The Basant Utsav is a celebration that ushers in spring. At Shantiniketan, there is a unique celebration on this day. To celebrate this festival, boys and girls dress in saffron-colored attire and sing and dance. Dol Jatra, on the other hand, is a component of the main Holi celebrations. Radha and Krishna's idols are paraded through the streets on Dol Purnima. Men throw water and coloured liquids at this procession to increase the fun.
- 4) Phaguwa (Bihar) : Holi and Bihar are synonymous. In the native Bhojpuri language, the festival is referred to as Phaguwa. But before playing Holi in Bihar, it's crucial to light the Holika pyre. Following that, Holi is celebrated with traditional songs, water, and colour powder made from natural sources. Bhang consumption takes place during the state's Holi celebrations.
- 5) Royal Holi (Udaipur Rajasthan) : Locals light bonfires the night before Holi to celebrate the holiday and drive away evil spirits in the holika dahan. The Mewar royal family of Udaipur puts on a grand celebration for this occasion. The royal band and decorated horses are part of the elaborate procession. Later, an effigy of Holika is burned while the customary sacred fire is lit.
- 6) Rang Panchami (Maharashtra and MP) : Holi is celebrated in Maharashtra in the most enjoyable way possible. Ranga Panchami, a day of colour celebrations that follows Holika Dahan, is observed on the fifth day.
- 7) Phakuwah (Assam) : Holi in Assam is known as Phagwah. It is comparable to the "Dol Jatra" of Bengal. However, the festival is observed over two days in this location. Clay huts are burned on the first day to symbolise the Holika dahan legend. The locals celebrate it with colour on the second day, just like everyone else!
- 8) Khadi Holi (Uttarakhand) : In the Kumaon region, which primarily consists of towns in Uttrakhand, Khadi Holi is celebrated. The locals participate in the celebration by donning traditional attire, singing khari songs, and dancing in groups. They walk in tolis and smile at everyone they come across. Holi is typically celebrated in this area as a musical event known by the names Baithika Holi, Khadi Holi, and Mahila Holi.
- 9) In South India : However, Kaamadeva, the love god of Indian mythology, is still revered in the south of the country. People have faith in the myth that describes Kaamadeva making a great sacrifice when he shot Lord Shiva with his love arrow to interrupt his meditation and pique his interest in earthly affairs.People become a little more sober in the evening after an eventful and enjoyable day and greet friends and family by paying them a visit and exchanging sweets. To promote harmony and brotherhood in society, numerous cultural organisations also host special get-togethers for Holi.
- 10) Yaosang Holi (Manipur): The Northeastern Gem, Manipur, is up next! This place celebrates Holi, also known as Yaosang locally, over six long days. The celebrations here combine Hindi and native North Eastern customs. The main attraction of Holi in this place is the Thabal Chongba, a traditional Manipuri folk dance that is performed during the festivities, even if there is a celebration with both wet and dry colours. Examples Manipuri and Hindu traditions blended together harmoniously and richly. Holi celebrations with colours throughout the entire day. Week-long Celebrations of Holi. Thobal Chongba Dancing Exhibitions.
- 11) Ukuli aka Manjal Kuli Holi (Kerala): It now descends to Kerala, God's Own Country. This state celebrates Manjal Kuli, or Ukuli, as its special version of Holi. This is a customary way of celebrating for the Kudumbi and Konkani communities of Kerala, and the events are not to be missed! Manjal Kuli, often known as turmeric, is the predominant colour utilized here as opposed to many other Indian states. explains how to use turmeric and other natural colours to enhance traditional Holi celebrations.
Holi History:
- Holi traditions differ across the country and have their origins in Indian mythology. In many places, the festival is linked to the legend of Hiranyakashipu, an ancient Indian demon king. Hiranyakashipu enlisted the help of his sister, Holika, to murder his son, Prahlada, a devout Vishnu worshipper. Holika sat with Prahlada on a pyre while wearing a cloak that protected her from the fire in an attempt to burn him. Instead, the cloak shielded Prahlada, and Holika burned. Later that night, Vishnu killed Hiranyakashipu, and the event was celebrated as a triumph of good over evil. To commemorate the occasion, a large pyre is lit in many parts of India on the night before Holi.
- The story of Krishna and Radha is central in other places. According to legend, Krishna, a Hindu deity considered a manifestation of Vishnu, fell in love with the milkmaid Radha but was embarrassed because his skin was dark blue and hers was fair. To make amends, he coloured her face while playing a game with her and the other milkmaids. This is thought to be the origin of throwing coloured water and powder. The general joy is also seen as typical of Krishna, who is known for his pranks and play.
- Holi is one of India's most revered and celebrated festivals, and it is observed in almost every part of the country. It is also known as the "festival of love" because on this day, people come together to forget their resentments and negative feelings toward one another. The grand Indian festival lasts one day and one night, beginning in the evening of Purnima, or the Full Moon Day in the month of Falgun. On the first evening of the festival, it is known as Holika Dahan or Choti Holi, and the following day is known as Holi. It is known by various names in different parts of the country.
Rituals of Holi:
- People begin collecting wood for the Holika bonfire, which is lit at one of the city's main intersections, days before the festival. This makes sure that a substantial amount of wood is gathered for the celebration itself.
- Then, on the night before Holi, is when Holika Dahan is held. The demon King Hiranyakashyap's sister Holika, who has a devilish nature, is represented by an effigy that is burned in wood. Holika attempted to murder Prahlad, Hiranyakashyap's son and a fervent follower of Lord Naarayana. The ritual represents both the triumph of a true devotee and the triumph of good over evil.
- Children also call Holika names and play practical jokes on her as if they were still trying to get rid of the troublemaker Dhundhi from the Kingdom of Prithu. Some individuals bring embers from the fire inside of their residences in order to rekindle their own indoor fires.
- The main day of Holi celebrations is, of course, the following day. On this day, which is known as Dhuleti, the actual display of colour takes place. Pujas are not customarily performed and are only meant to be enjoyed.
- Even in that region, there is no comparison to the Holi celebrations in Mathura and Vrindavan. The tradition of playing with colour is particularly widespread in north India. Holi is also joyfully and fervently celebrated in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
- People enjoy pouring buckets and buckets of coloured water on each other or spraying each other with pichkaris. Another part of the tradition involves dancing to the beat of the dholak and singing Holi songs from Bollywood. People enjoy gujiya, mathri, malpuas, and other traditional Holi treats with great joy in the midst of all this activity.
- Drinks, particularly thandai spiked with bhang, are an essential component of the Holi celebration. Bhang contributes to the occasion's spirit, but if used excessively, it could also dampen it. Therefore, it should be consumed with caution.
Tradition:
- Tradition of Thandai: The Holi custom is ingrained in Thandai. When people start to get a little tired of throwing each other in the colourful pool of water, they enjoy a refreshing and healthy drink called thandai. A glass of Thandai provides immediate vigour and creates the ideal environment for playing with colour. Additionally, it has the ability to make one sing, dance, and lose control when mixed with bhang. In fact, bhang thandai is used to set the mood for the Holi festival.
- Tradition of Bhang: Bhang, once connected to Lord Shiva, is now associated with Holi. to the point where bhang beverages are now recognised as traditional Holi beverages.Bhang, a highly intoxicating substance made from cannabis leaves and buds, contributes to the heightened spirit of Holi, a festival that disregards all boundaries. Everyone enjoys the day's mouthwatering thandai, pakoras, and vadas, all of which contain bhang as a vital component.
